Malta’s euro coins
On 1 January 2008 Malta’s euro coins replaced the Maltese lira (MTL) at 1 euro = 0.429300 MTL, when Malta joined the European Monetary Union, after being a member of the European Union since May 2004.
A public competition involving Maltese citizens was held to select the designs for Malta’s national euro sides. The chosen designs were:
- 1, 2 and 5 euro cents: the Mnajdra temple, a prehistoric megalithic complex on Malta’s southern coast dating from the third millennium BC and a UNESCO World Heritage Site;
- 10, 20 and 50 euro cents: the coat of arms of the Republic of Malta;
- 1 and 2 euros: the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St John, known as the Maltese cross. The Hospitallers were based in Jerusalem, then Rhodes and, from 1530, Malta; the order was not founded on the island.
Malta’s euro coins were struck by the French mint, La Monnaie de Paris.
