Identifying gold issues

Identify a coin by comparing both sides, date, mint and edge with the issue catalogue. A photograph’s colour does not establish the metal: check weight, diameter and fineness where documented.

The selection includes the recorded franc types, even without photographs. Pre-franc issues and euro coins require separate catalogues.

Types and sources

The gold 100 francs of Charles III dates from 1882–1886; the 1877 is a lead pattern and the 1881 a copper pattern. The 5 centimes of Honoré V distinguish large/small heads and copper/brass; the décime distinguishes metal and the crown knot. The 2 francs of 1995 is a regular non-circulating type, distinct from collector commemoratives.
