Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, was born in Chicago on 14 September 1955. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, he was ordained a priest in 1982 and carried out an important part of his ministry in Peru.
He served as Prior General of the Augustinians, Bishop of Chiclayo and, from 2023, Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. The conclave elected him pope on 8 May 2025; he chose the name Leo XIV.
In the Vatican’s numismatic history, his pontificate follows that of Francis and the 2025 sede vacante. The catalogue presents the eight ordinary coins with the new national sides for 2026.
