Coins of Argentina
Monetary history of Argentina
Early issues and the national system
The sequence begins with the reales and soles of the United Provinces. In 1881 the peso moneda nacional unified national coinage, including the gold argentino and silver patacón. BCRA
From the peso ley to the austral
The peso moneda nacional was followed by the peso ley in 1970, peso argentino in 1983 and austral in 1985. These names identify distinct units, which should be recognised before comparing denominations. BCRA
The peso since 1992
The new peso series began in January 1992. The end of convertibility in 2002 changed the monetary regime without introducing a new denomination. The catalogue keeps earlier peso systems and the austral separate. BCRA
Argentine coinage spans the first issues in reales, successive peso systems, the austral and the peso from 1992.
